Seven killed in bombings, shootings in Iraq

BAGHDAD: Bombings and shootings killed seven people and wounded 17 others in Iraq on Monday, security and medical officials said.

So far this month, attacks have killed 62 people, 43 of them members of the security forces, according to medical and security sources.

In the deadliest attack on Monday, a bomb placed in a car killed three people and wounded 13 in Al-Haswa area, south of Baghdad, police and a medical source said.

A bomb targeting a house belonging to a Kurdish family in Khanaqin, northeast of Baghdad, killed two people and wounded two others, a police lieutenant colonel and a medical source said.

In northern Baghdad, gunmen with silenced weapons shot dead police Lieutenant Colonel Ghanem Sabah while he was driving, an interior ministry official said.

A medical source at Al-Kindi hospital said the facility had received Ghanem’s body.

The ministry official also said gunmen with silenced weapons killed an electricity ministry employee driving in south Baghdad, while a roadside bomb wounded two Baghdad municipality employees in the east of the capital.

A medical source put the toll from the roadside bomb attack at three wounded.

While violence has decreased compared with its peak in 2006 and 2007, attacks remain common across Iraq. There were attacks on 27 of the 31 days in July.

Official figures put the number of people killed in attacks in July at 325, the highest monthly death toll since August 2010. -- Agencies
