ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court Monday resumed hearing of Asghar Khan Case which alleges that country’s premier intelligence agency forked out millions among anti-PPP political parties before 1990 general elections.
A bench of the apex court comprising Chief Justice Pakistan (CJP), Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Jawad S. Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif Husain heard the 1996 petition of Tehreek-e-Istiqlal’s Chief Asghar Khan regarding allegations of the ISI’s financing of politicians to sabotage the victory of Pakistan People’s Party.
During the hearing, CJP said that those found to have links with the payout would be held accountable.
Moreover, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) failed to produce the notification about the setting up of the ISI’s political cell.
Upon being asked by the Supreme Court, the Attorney General Pakistan (AGP), Irfan Qadir apprised that the 39-year-old notification was not produced as of yet.
The chief justice said the notification should be in the Gazette of Pakistan, adding that being the country’s chief law officer, Irfan Qadir should assist the court in this regard.
The CJP further inquired the AGP over the response of the MoD over the notification.
Commander Shahbaz, representing the ministry, apprised the court that it (ministry) did not have a copy of the notification.
However, the-then Director General ISI, Asad Durrani told the court that one of his friend has shown him the notification’s copy.
