Haqqani files application for court appearance exemption

ISLAMABAD: Asma Jehangir, counsel for the former US ambassador, Husain Haqani following court directives filed an application for exemption from court appearances on Tuesday.

The application said that in the backdrop of the judicial commissions report on the controversial memorandum, different sections of the media and certain political leaders branded him (Haqqani) a traitor which was why his life was in danger from opposition and extremist circles.

Furthermore, Haqqani requested the court that due to his illness he was undergoing medical treatment abroad and that was why he could not return to Pakistan and should therefore be declared exempt from court proceedings in the case.

During the July 12 hearing of the memo case, the Supreme Court gave Haqqani’s counsel three days’ time to file a request for exemption.

A nine member bench, headed by Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan, has been hearing the controversy which resulted after the memo commission held Husain Haqqani responsible for drafting the memo.
