ISLAMABAD: With irregular oil and gas supply and the haul up of Chashma-1/2 plants electricity load shedding Sunday intensified with a production cut exceeding 5,005 megawatts.

Power outages suddenly prolonged on Saturday morning due to inconsistent supply of oil to power generation companies. The haul up of Chashma-1 and Chashma-2 power plants also cut 650MW of electricity to the national grid.

Energy Management Cell spokesman said that the reason behind electricity load management was the uneven supply of furnace oil to power stations besides the closure of the Chashma-I and Chashma-II plants. He said that Pakistan State Oil (PSO) cut down the supply of furnace oil due to non-payment and power stations were currently receiving 20,000 tons of furnace oil instead of 38,000 tons.

This has brought the countrywide power production to 12,000 megawatt only, while the demand peaks at 17,500 MW.

Residents across the country were forced to experience unannounced and prolonged load shedding lasting up to 13 hours in cities and 16 hours in urban areas.
