NATO containers stranded in Karachi

KARACHI: The oil tankers tasked with carrying oil for NATO/ISAF troops in Afghanistan could not leave Karachi for Afghanistan on Tuesday.

According to sources, lack of security for the tankers was the impeded the oil tankers to resume operations. On the other hand, the oil companies too have to supply oil to the tankers.

General Secretary of All Pakistan Oil Tankers Owners Association (APOTOA) demanded to clear off the previous amount before the oil tankers could leave for Afghanistan for further supply. He has also asked to provide additional security to the tankers carrying oil for NATO forces.

President APOTOA-Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Nasir Khan had earlier told that the supply would resume from July 17.

NATO containers in unnoticeable numbers have been moving to and fro across the border since reopening of the border.

Officials at the port city of Karachi said a dispute about the payment of damages for thousands of containers blockaded for seven months, which has led to sluggish overland supplies, could be resolved this week.
