18 traders kidnapped for ransom in July 2012: report . |

KARACHI: Karachi witnessed a steep rise in terror acts, street crimes, kidnapping for ransom, and extortion in the last two months, it was learnt on Wednesday. According to statistics gathered from varied sources, seventeen days into July, around 109 people were slaughtered with the total death tally for seven months in year 2012 exceeding 1000 persons. Around 52 policemen were also killed during the last six months. Bomb attacks, indiscriminate firing on business centers and residence of traders has become a norm of the day. According to the business community, around 18 businessmen were abducted in the month of July alone, while 220 traders received threatening phone calls, text messages, and written demands to extort money. Factory owners, industrialists, store owners forked out billions of rupees as life insurance money to extortion gangs.
