Floods kill 408 in KP, says minister


PESHAWAR: At least 408 persons have been killed and many others are missing in rains and flash floods in Khyber Pakthukunkhwa during last three days.
Addressing a press conference in Peshawar on Friday, provincial minister for information Mian Iftikhar Hussain said that according to official estimate about 408 people have lost their lives due to rains and flash floods in the province. However, he added that the death toll could rise, as many people are stilling missing. He appealed to world community and philanthropists for assistance for coping with the province’s worst floods in its history.
He said that the first priority of the government is to rescue the stranded people and provide food to them.
He said that the provincial government has 25000 tents, adding that 10000 tents have been provided for DI Khan while the remaining would be provided to affectees in other areas.
He said that GT road, motorway and rail tracks have been inundated, while Nowshera, Charsadda and Peshawar are the most affected plain areas, while Malakand was also the worst hit hilly area in the province.
He said that due to opening of Tarbila dam spillways, the water are flowing back in the Indus river, while DI Khan is facing threats from the floods due opening of Tarbila dam spillway.
